Car accidents and the injuries they cause

Different types of injuries will arise from a car accident, with the severity depending on factors like speed, impact location, and the presence of safety features. New York drivers will want to know, or relearn, the types of injuries that occur and how.

The most common injuries (and those of least concern, relatively speaking) are scratches, bruises, and fractures. They can arise from car accidents where one car is stationary and the other is traveling at a low speed. Normally, the impact location is in the rear or the side opposite the victim. Back and neck injuries may arise from rear-end collisions at higher speeds. Whiplash, a condition where the muscles and other soft tissues in the neck are sprained or strained, is a frequent outcome of rear-end collisions.

Head-on collisions and collisions on the side closest to the victim often lead to trauma to the brain, the internal organs, or both. Brain trauma is sometimes synonymous with a concussion. When the internal organs are traumatized, they could rupture and kill the victim if surgery isn't performed right away.

Some cars may reduce the impact of injuries simply because they are better made. Airbags, seat belts, and other features will also alter the chances of a serious injury. However, even seemingly minor injuries can put families through financial hardship.

When the other driver is responsible for a car accident, the victim can file a claim in the effort to be reimbursed for medical expenses, vehicle damage, and pain and suffering. A claim could also cover future medical expenses, such as for rehabilitative care, and both past and future lost wages. Having an attorney conduct settlement negotiations can be advisable.
