According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, a suspected DWI head-on collision claimed the life of a man on Dec. 6. The accident allegedly occurred on Route 25.

According to reports, the 71-year-old man was driving east in his 2008 Chevy truck on the highway in Greenport when he allegedly crossed over the center line. After crossing into the oncoming lanes, he allegedly collided head-on into a 2006 Honda being driven by a 22-year-old Peconic man.

A passenger in the Honda was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Honda and the Chevy’s driver were also transported for treatment of injuries. The Chevy driver was reportedly in the hospital under police custody. While there, he posted a $250 bail. He was set to appear in court to answer a charge of DWI on Dec. 16. Police believe the man, who is a local business owner, was intoxicated at the time of the wreck. They also indicated it was raining heavily at the time of the accident and that rain may also have been a factor.

When drunk drivers cause car accidents, the family of any person killed may be able to file a lawsuit against the drunk driver responsible for their loved one’s death. Through a wrongful death lawsuit, families may be able to recover damages to compensate them for both their economic and noneconomic losses. Depending on the individual facts, people may be able to recover damages for pain and suffering, medical expenses, funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship, lost income, lost inheritance rights and others. The families of those killed may wish to schedule a consultation with a personal injury attorney. An attorney may be able to provide a fair evaluation of an individual case.
