A 15-year-old girl was hit by a New York MTA bus in a pedestrian knockdown accident on the morning of Feb. 13 in Williamsburg. She was taken to the hospital with severe injuries to her left leg.
The pedestrian accident happened around 8:45 a.m. when the girl was crossing north on Grand Street. The bus, which was moving south on Union Avenue, turned left onto Grand Street and hit her, pinning her leg under the vehicle, police reported. An MTA spokesperson said that the bus remained on the scene with an unstated number of passengers on it.
The bus driver, who is 58 year old, was arrested under a city law passed in May 2014. Administrative code 19-190 addresses injuring or killing pedestrians or cyclists who have the right of way. Such offenses are now criminal misdemeanors. Before that law was passed in 2014, accidents like this would have been treated as traffic violations.
A lawyer might be of help with a pedestrian accident when a pedestrian knockdown occurs at a crosswalk or in an intersection and the victim suffers injury. When serious injuries, such as head trauma, brain injury, a back injury, neck injury or broken bones, occur, a lawyer could review the investigation, examine reports based on accident reconstruction and attempt to establish fault for the incident. If fault is established, a lawyer might be able to file a lawsuit to seek compensation for medical expenses. If the accident was fatal, a lawyer could help the accident victim’s family seek compensation.
