New Yorkers may be saddened to learn about a recent case in New Jersey in which an emergency medical technician was killed in an ambulance accident during her last shift. Reportedly, the accident happened on July 25 around 8 a.m. in East Brunswick.

According to sources, the EMT was riding in an ambulance with a co-worker as they were rushing to the scene of a car accident. According to witnesses, the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated. A car reportedly crashed into the ambulance, causing it to flip over and to hit another car.

The 22-year-old Piscataway woman died in the accident. The car’s driver and the ambulance’s driver both were injured and were transported to the hospital for treatment. The young woman who died had just completed her undergraduate program at Rutgers University, graduating in May. She was scheduled to return to medical school at Rutgers in the fall, and the shift in which she was killed was supposed to have been her final one.

When people are driving on the highways, they owe a duty of care to the drivers around them. One of those duties is to yield to emergency vehicles. When a driver fails to do so, as it appears occurred in this case, and a person then dies as a result, the negligent driver may be held to be civilly liable through a subsequent lawsuit. The families of those killed in car accidents caused by negligent drivers may want to consult with a personal injury attorney about their options. Upon reviewing the facts, an attorney may help by drafting and filing the civil complaint that is necessary to initiate a wrongful death lawsuit.
