1 driver, 2 passengers hurt in drag racing crash

A New York motorist has been accused of reckless behavior which led to an accident that caused injuries to her and two of her passengers. Police have charged her with a variety of violations of criminal and motor vehicle laws.

According to official reports, the 19-year-old woman was racing with another car in the city of Hempstead at 3:45 a.m. on Nov. 15. At some point she lost control of the car and ran into a utility pole. The impact left her with a severe head injury and her two passengers, a 29-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, with injuries that were not described as life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle that they had been racing did not stay at the scene of the accident to render assistance or provide a police report.

The woman, a resident of Copiague, faces criminal charges including third-degree assault and two counts of reckless endangerment in the second degree. She has also been charged with several motor vehicle violations.

People who have been injured in a motor vehicle accident that was caused by a reckless or negligent driver may often have to face long periods of recovery during which they incur significant medical expenses. In many cases, their financial situation is worsened when they are unable to return to work and thus lose wages that they would otherwise have earned. A person in this situation may want to have the assistance of a personal injury attorney in filing a lawsuit against the at-fault motorist that would seek compensation for the damages that have been sustained.
