An accident involving one vehicle left five people injured in the early hours of March 28 on Long Island. Two of the victims were critically injured. Police believe the incident was caused by a backseat driver.
According to Nassau County police, the crash happened at about 3:45 a.m. on a Sunrise Highway, when a 22-year-old man driving a 2005 Nissan and travelling east, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a utility pole. The man had been arguing with a 19-year-old Seaford woman who was sitting in the backseat and who began hitting him, causing him to lose control. The woman was charged with second degree reckless endangerment for her role in the incident.
The five people in the vehicle, including the driver, were injured. An 18-year-old woman who was ejected from the car and a 17-year-old man who was partially ejected were both listed in critical condition. A 23-year-old man who was sitting in the front passenger seat was released from the hospital after treatment. The driver and the 19-year-old woman were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police stated that the woman would be arraigned when medically possible. As in similar car accidents, police are continuing their investigation.
The victims of automobile accidents might await the final police report and consult with an attorney before deciding if they want to file a personal injury lawsuit for damages, so that they see which person or persons might be found liable. As the investigation continues other factors might be uncovered, such as the driver’s role in the accident.
