A New York man who allegedly killed a woman and injured her daughter in a July 17 car accident has been charged with multiple crimes, including vehicular manslaughter. The charges were announced by the district attorney on July 20.

According to authorities, the 58-year-old suspect was driving on a suspended license when he ran a stop sign and smashed his BMW into a 40-year-old woman’s car. He was allegedly traveling at more than 60 mph in a 25 mph zone at the time of the crash. The force of the collision caused the woman and her 9-year-old daughter to be ejected from the rear window of their vehicle. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Her daughter suffered serious injuries, including head trauma, and was transported to a local hospital.

The suspect, a College Point resident, hit three more cars before finally stopping his vehicle and fleeing on foot. Police officers reportedly found him drinking outdoors two days after the crash and took him into custody. He has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault and criminal negligent homicide. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 3.

Negligent drivers who cause fatal car accidents may face a civil lawsuit in addition to any criminal charges that are filed. Examples of driver negligence include speeding, reckless driving, drunk driving and distracted driving. The surviving family members of a person who has been killed in such an accident may want to have an attorney’s assistance in seeking compensation for their losses through a wrongful death lawsuit.
