A woman lost her life in Essex County after a wrong-way motorist struck the pickup truck in which she was riding. Three other individuals suffered injuries in the head-on collision. The accident happened after the reported wrong-way driver took police on a chase.

How the motor vehicle accident happened

The New York crash took place on a recent Monday on Interstate 87. According to authorities, a 37-year-old man was driving in the wrong direction on the interstate. Police apparently attempted to stop the man but were not able to do so.

The man’s car is said to have struck a truck, killing a 47-year-old woman passenger. The driver and two kids in the pickup truck suffered injuries and were transported to a medical center. Their conditions were deemed stable two days after the collision. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

Legal recourse available following the accident

The surviving loved ones of the woman who died in the New York accident have the right to file a wrongful death claim against the alleged wrong-way driver, seeking the reimbursement of financial damages sustained due to the wreck. Personal injury claims may also be filed against the male driver on behalf of the three injured parties. The plaintiffs must first establish liability, based upon a showing of negligence before a judge will decide their claims for damages. Any resulting monetary judgment can be used to cover any losses stemming from the accident, such as hospital expenses and burial costs.
